8020 Media - Change is Good

Today we have made a small, but important change. To better represent what we've done and where we are going as a company, we have changed our name to 8020 Media. Publishing magazines is a critical part of our business, but there is so much more going on within the community. A lot of this activity happens online, with people interacting with other users, entering weekly challenges and online events, and sharing and reviewing stories and photos by other members. But it also happens in the real world with gallery shows, sponsored events, and community-driven meetups.

So as of today, we are now known simply as 8020 Media. Not a big change, but hopefully one that better represents what we do as a company.

Thanks Paul

It was two and a half years ago when Paul Cloutier first met Halsey Minor and they started talking about the way the Internet and online communities could make magazines better. That was the start of 8020 Publishing, and Paul has done so much since then to help this company grow and to create great web sites and magazines. Now after two and half years (he claims it is the longest he's ever worked at one place), Paul is taking time away from 8020 Publishing to work on new personal projects. He will still be involved as an important advisor to our company, but his day-to-day responsibilities are over. Paul is deeply talented, level-headed, and a true joy to work with. Thanks for everything Paul.

Everywhere on Hold

As written in this aloha blog post from Everywhere's Editor-in-Chief, Todd Lappin, we have decided to put Everywhere Magazine on hold. There is no denying the high-quality of each issue of Everywhere, and we are grateful to the thousands who contributed their personal stories and photos. The Everywhere website will still be a place to share travel stories and photos, but this next issue will the be the last one for the foreseeable future. The opportunity for us now is to continue to improve on the JPG platform - to build it out further in new and exciting ways for the JPG community and for future titles based on the same model of community involvement. JPG just reached a great milestone with over 10 million pageviews in July, and refocusing our efforts will only help JPG and all future titles from 8020 Publishing.

Mr. Magazine Selects Everywhere as a Notable Launch of 07

The 5 honorees were narrowed from an original list of 30 new magazine launches. Mr. Magazine briefly describes his criteria for these selections:

"The [choices] reflect my opinion and belief that these titles are innovative and have the potential to make an impact on the industry."

We are quite honored to be selected and want to again thank the Everywhere community for their contribution in the success of Everywhere Magazine. Thanks!

Newsweek Article on 8020 Publishing

Today, 8020 Publishing was the focus of the Newsweek article A Twist on the Traditional Magazine Model. The article focuses on the shift in media consumption towards online content and 8020's model of publishing community-generated content.

Contributors from both JPG and Everywhere were interviewed for the article, and their experiences help illustrate the continuing value of print publications. Published Everywhere contributor Sloan Schang relates his experience of having his travel writing published in Everywhere Issue 02:

"It's definitely different seeing something on the page and holding it and knowing that it was valued enough for it to go into print...My parents immediately wanted to know where they could go buy it."

Overall, it's a great piece on the 8020 model of community-powered magazines.

Laura Brunow Miner is JPG's New Editor

We are super excited to announce that Laura Brunow Miner is our new Editor for JPG!

Laura has worked with us nearly since the start of the magazine, first as Designer then as Design Director for JPG. For the last 5 issues she has been integrally involved in the editorial development of the magazine as well. She has been a huge part of what makes the magazine what it is today.

Laura has a great sensibility for JPG's editorial mission, and her passion for the community and a real understanding of the power of the images that come from this community make her the ideal person to guide this magazine. She was even published in JPG before she came to work with us.

JPG is what you make it, and in the last year and a bit we have seen you all take JPG to places we never would have expected. Your submissions to the themes are consistently surprising and your photo essays are giving us new insight into your lives, a world that the mainstream media is increasingly ignoring. This is the idea behind our new tagline: "Your World in Pictures". You have begun to show us something so much more than just photography, it's the real world shown to us through pictures, the details of your lives and experiences that are so much more authentic than we are seeing anywhere else.

It is for these reasons that finding the right person to be the Editor is so important; a person to guide a magazine that gives you a voice. We are enormously lucky to have in Laura someone who understands all of this so well and has such familiarity with what makes JPG so special.

As of today, Laura officially takes the title of Editor of JPG, but in our minds she has been doing the job in all but title for quite some time now. And what a great time for her to be able to immerse herself in the role completely, because with our next issue on Human Impact we have a great example of the kinds of things we want to see much more of in the coming issues of JPG.

So thanks to all of you in the community for helping to create such an incredible collection of photos and stories for us to work with, we know that Laura will be an excellent curator of your hard work. Good luck Laura!

Todd Lappin, our Editor for Everywhere, recently did an interview for a podcast called Periodical Radio that's produced by The College of Saint Rose in Albany, New York. They have just posted the podcast and a transcript of the whole interview. In it they cover quite a bit of territory about why we made the magazine the way we did, what it is like working with community submissions, and the competitive market for magazines like this.

So if you have ever wondered what goes on in our heads or how we make Everywhere, come check it out.

Mr. Magazine's 7 great magazine moments of 07

Dr. Samir Husni, who most people know as Mr. Magazine, has included us in his list of 7 great magazine moments of 2007. We're part of a list that includes Portfolio Magazine, Time Magazine, Garden and Gun, Outside's Go, Men's Health Living, and Monocle... pretty good company if you ask us.

About us he says:

"The launch of Everywhere and the re-launch of JPG: Both magazines, published by 8020 Publishing, show that a partnership can exist between both technologies: paper and pixels. Just give to paper what is paper’s and to pixels what is pixel’s."

8020 featured in the New York Times

This past weekend, the New York Times ran an article on 8020 Publishing. The feature focuses both on the aspects that make 8020 Publishing unique within the magazine industry and on our place within the field of user-generated online content. The article also has a great quote from Samir Husni:

"'You’re going to see more of this,' said Samir Husni, who is chairman of the journalism department at the University of Mississippi and writes the well-known magazine business blog Mrmagazine.com. 'I don’t think it’s just about getting cheap content into a magazine. Seeing their own work in print makes people feel like part of a community.'"

Its a nice introduction to the 8020 story and is generating a lot of great discussion on the future of print media.

This week we're celebrating the success of our exhibition and silent auction of fashion photography, held at San Francisco's Space Gallery. The exhibition featured photography from the last issue of JPG Magazine and sale of the JPG prints raised over $1800 for the not-for-profit Gen Art Foundation.

A ton of people came out to admire the lovely photography and take part in JPG member Michael O'Neill's interactive photo project. Here are some shots of the hard-working 8020 staff:
